Metro trains Melbourne
My role // Head up the design function
Activities undertaken // Design strategy, target operating model, customer interviews, workshops
Challenge
Metro Trains were struggling with a lack of guiding principles and a digital strategy which was impeding their rapid growth.
Some major pain-points were:
The engagement between design, technology and the rest of the business was poorly managed
There was no clear prioritisation of initiatives and delegation of authority
A clear lack of central application portfolio management and tech-wide view of initiatives
Approach
Our approach was to initially identify their business initiative roadmap components so we can help them with a digital strategy.
We conducted over a dozen of workshops with key Metro stakeholders, and our initial observations were to:
Identify business pain-points and map them to major initiatives
Define key elements of design and technology landscape
Define target technology roadmap and operating model framework
Identify key capability gaps and the next steps in implementing the strategy
Outcome
We developed a set of guiding principles and value drivers to lay a foundation for their digital capability.
We assessed the current technology architecture and outlined critical capability gaps that need to be addressed quickly
We developed 7 strategic themes and defined a future-state technology landscape to focus on the next 12 months
We defined a target operating model and a change & communication plan
We developed an implementation strategy for the upcoming quarter
